| These beverages are called liqueurs everywhere else in the world, except in the U.S. where we call them cordials. This funky category contains spirits that are flavored with herbs, fruits, spices, and sometimes cream. They are descendants of herbal remedies that were made by monks as far back as the 13th century. In fact some liqueurs are still made by monks today; one of the better contributions to society made by members of a religious organization, unlike the Crusades, Spanish Inquisition, Salem Witch Trials, or todays current Jihad - maybe if everyone was just more cordial... We think of liqueurs as belonging to one of several categories: Anise liqueurs taste like licorice, and include Absinthe, Galliano, Ouzo, & Sambuca. Herbal liqueurs include Drambuie, Benedictine, & Jagermeister; infused with herbs. Fruit liqueurs include the orange group (Grand Marnier, Citronge, & Cointreau), as well as Lemoncello, Midori, Amarula, & Hypnotiq. Nutty liqueurs, such as Amaretto (almond), Frangelico (hazelnut), and the vanilla liqueurs (Tuaca, Licor 43), make excellent after diner drinks. Coffee flavors are well represented with Kaluha, Starbucks, Tia Maria, & Kamora. Chocolate gets in to the mix with the Godiva brand. Finally, cream liqueurs include the Irish Creams: Bailey's, St Brendan's, etc. Keep in mind there is a huge difference between the naturally flavored liqueurs and the cheap artificially flavored ones such as Triple Sec.
